A classificação adotada no mapa de Clima do Brasil é baseada em 3 sistemas que integram métodos quantitativos e de dinâmicaatmosférica. O primeiro sistema, mais abrangente, relativo à gênese climática, fundamentado na climatologia dinâmica e nospadrões de circulação atmosférica, define os 3 climas zonais (Equatorial, Tropical e Temperado) e suas subunidades regionais.O segundo sistema delimita as regiões térmicas (Mesotérmico Mediano e Brando, Subquente e Quente) e fundamenta-se na frequênciae médias dos valores extremos mensais. A classificação de regiões quanto aos padrões de umidade e seca mensais (que vãode Superúmido até Semiárido) é resultante do terceiro sistema adotado. Neste, o autor relaciona o número de meses secos comtipo de vegetação natural predominante, afim de mostrar a interação do regime climático com a biogeografia e a ecologia.Os 3 sistemas, e suas unidades relacionadas, são independentes e se superpõem, resultando em diversas regiões climaticamentee ecologicamente distintas.Originalmente idealizado e produzido por Edmon Nimer e sua equipe, em 1974, o mapa sofreu atualizações quanto à representaçãoda classificação, sem interferência nos limites das unidades, nem tampouco houve atualização dos dados. As cores das unidadesclimáticas foram selecionadas para simbolizar a combinação da temperatura com a umidade.O texto de referência da publicação é NIMER, Edmond.
