O Mapa Hidrogeológico da Região Nordeste do Brasil representa cartograficamente a produtividade dos aquíferos desta regiãoa partir dos valores de vazões e de vazões específicas de 54.864 poços tubulares. Estas informações estão armazenadasem banco de dados e agrupadas em intervalos. Esta metodologia segue, em parte, os procedimentos utilizados no Mapa deDomínios/Subdomínios Hidrogeológicos do Brasil (CPRM, 2007) e nas Cartas Hidrogeológicas do Brasil ao Milionésimo (CPRM).O conceito de Domínio Hidrogeológico é definido para um conjunto de unidades geológicas que apresentam as mesmas aptidõeshidrogeológicas, incluindo litologia, espessura, principais aquíferos e sistemas aquíferos, modos de circulação, qualificaçãoquímica das águas subterrâneas, etc. Para representar os quatro diferentes tipos de Domínios Hidrogeológicos que ocorrem naRegião Nordeste (Poroso, Fissural, Poroso-Fissural e Cárstico) foram adotadas as seguintes cores:Aquíferos Porosos (tonalidades do azul) Aquíferos Fissurais (tonalidades do verde) Aquíferos Porosos-Fissurais (tonalidades do laranja) Aquíferos Cársticos (tonalidades do lilás) As produtividades das unidades hidroestratigráficas espacializadas neste mapa traduzem a média estatística das vazões dospoços catalogados em um determinado domínio hidrogeológico, que tem como limite os polígonos geológicos que o compõe. Destafeita, a classe de vazão representada no mapa, muitas vezes, não coincide com a classe de vazão da unidade geológica aflorante.
